  The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association provides a network directory accessing all the Blue Cross Blue Shield plans across the country. If we had to pick a single directory that would appeal to the largest number of health care consumers, this would be it.

Networks of Largest Health Insurers

Following are provider network links for many of the nation's leading health insurance organizations. We have attempted to list them in order of size, beginning with the biggest:

• UnitedHealthCare
  United HealthCare offers individual health insurance through its Golden Rule Division. The UnitedHealthOne family of products are offered (at last count) in 40 states plus the District of Columbia.

• Wellpoint

  • Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield
  • Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield

  At last count Wellpoint operated 13 Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans, including Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield (New York). The other Blue Cross / Blue Shield plans operate under the "Anthem" brand name in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio and Wisconsin. In California the Wellpoint company is Anthem Blue Cross. Blue Shield of California is a distinct health insurance company that is not part of Wellpoint.

• Kaiser Permanente
  Kaiser Permanente operates plans in California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Ohio, Oregon and Washington.

• Aetna
  At last count Aetna was marketing individual health insurance products in 24 states and the District of Columbia.

• Humana
  "HumanaOne" is the individual health insurance product offering from Humana. At last count HumanaOne is marketed in 25 states.

• Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC)

  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma

• Coventry
  As of our last survey, Coventry is marketing their CoventryOne individual health insurance products in 25 states.

• Highmark

  • Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield (Pennsylvania)

  Cigna is a big national health insurance company but, as of our last count, markets individual plans only in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
