In a true consumer-directed health care system, consumers need to have access to reliable comparative information about health care costs and quality. The health insurance industry often describes this as "transparency."
Over the last few years health insurance companies have said plenty about transparency, but it's been virtually all hype and no substance.
We'd become somewhat cynical about the health insurance industry's true commitment to price transparency, but Anthem has given us cause for optimism. They're actually delivering some substance on this issue.
Anthem Care Comparison (available through the MyAnthem homepage for Anthem clients) provides cost and quality data you need to choose the right hospitals and medical care providers. Though, at the time of this writing, Care Comparison is only available in limited markets, including Central Indiana -- an apparent benefit of Anthem being headquartered in Indianapolis.
You can also see the number of times a service is annually performed by a provider. In addition, you can also access sophisticated quality scores for hospitals.
Perhaps the best way to understand how Anthem Care Comparison works is by viewing Anthem's Care Comparison Demo (flash video).
We're so pleased that Anthem is taking an industry lead in providing consumer access to provider cost data. The information tools will only get more sophisticated and health care consumers will be empowered as they've never been in the modern era.
MedPlan Access views this as a very important step in the evolution of consumer-directed health care. Congratulations to Anthem/Wellpoint.
