Anthem Blue Access Overview

Blue Access is the brand name for the preferred provider organization (PPO) plans offered by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Indiana's largest health insurer.

Our comments on each of the Anthem traditional PPO plans for Indiana residents:

Superior Benefits - Plan 2 & Plan 3

With co-pay benefits for office visits and prescriptions, Blue Access Plan 2 is the Anthem option most similar to typical employer-sponsored plans:
  • Superior benefits
  • 80% coverage after deductible
  • $25 co-pay office visit benefit (no limit)
  • Generic and Brand Name Rx co-pays
  • Network Deductible Options:
      - $250 individual / $500 family
      - $500 individual / $1,000 family
      - $1,000 individual / $2,000 family
      - $2,500 individual / $5,000 family

Sometimes it's difficult to choose between Blue Access Plan 2 and Blue Access Plan 3 -- Anthem's most popular Indiana plans -- as both offer superior benefits.  Plan 2 is better for doctor's office visits, but Plan 3 more effectively limits your potential out-of-pocket expense.  The two plans provide identical prescription drug card benefits.

Blue Access Plan 3 benefit highlights include:
  • 100% coverage after deductible
  • Generic and Brand Name Rx co-pays
  • Does not include office visit co-pay
  • Network Deductible Options:
      - $2,500 individual / $5,000 family
      - $5,000 individual / $10,000 family
      - $10,000 individual / $20,000 family

Lower Cost Plans

Plan 1 was originally designed to be the lower cost alternative to Plan 2 and to Plan 3.  Anthem has since introduced the Economy Plan and Value Plan, which provide reduced benefits at a still lower cost.
  • Generic Rx only
  • Does not include office visit co-pay
  • Better Comprehensive Benefits than Economy Plan or Value Plan
  • Network Deductible Options:
      - $500 individual / $1,000 family
      - $1,000 individual / $2,000 family
      - $2,500 individual / $5,000 family
      - $5,000 individual / $10,000 family

With lower deductibles, a limited office visit co-pay benefit (3 visits per year) and a generic prescription co-pay card, Blue Access Economy looks like a budget version of the popular Blue Access Plan 2.

Under the Blue Access Economy plan, coverage is not provided for preventive care and substance abuse/mental health.  Prescription benefits are capped at $500 per year:
  • Limited office visit co-pay benefit
  • Generic Rx only - with $500 annual max benefit
  • Network Deductible Options:
      - $500 individual / $1,000 family
      - $1,000 individual / $2,000 family
      - $1,500 individual / $3,000 family
      - $2,500 individual / $5,000 family

This is Anthem's lowest cost traditional PPO plan.  Unlike the Economy Plan, the Value Plan provides benefits for adult preventive care, substance abuse/mental health and brand name drugs.  However, the Value Plan is offered at higher deductibles:
  • Preventive care coverage
  • Limited office visit benefits (2 per person per year)
  • $500 annual max benefit for Rx
  • Network Deductible Options:
      - $2,000 individual / $4,000 family
      - $3,000 individual / $6,000 family
      - $5,000 individual / $10,000 family
      - $10,000 individual / $20,000 family
